John has lost two jobs in 10 years, each time because his company was downsized. Now near retirement age and unable to find new work, he has lost his health care benefits and worries that his children will have to care for him financially. Brenda and her husband both lost their jobs in September and face foreclosure on their home, even as they search daily for new work. Before she was laid off, Patricia was forced to train her replacement, who lives in another country. Jerry’s hometown was devastated after two manufacturing plants moved overseas, leaving more than 1,000 skilled machinists out of work. He’s been out of work for more than two years, and his son, who just returned from active duty in Egypt while in the National Guard, also can’t find a job. These are the stories of America’s workers, real life struggles of people trying to support themselves and their families at a time when 15 million people are unemployed, underemployed or too discouraged to look for work.
