Bus Tour Background
March 24-31, 2004

These are the faces of the jobs crisis in America:

A worker who lost his job at a manufacturing plant…a teenager working low-wage jobs who can’t afford college…an out-of-work father who is depleting his family savings to pay for health insurance for his family…a woman who works with unemployed people and helps them deal with depression, retraining, bankruptcy and health care…an IT worker whose job was sent overseas who is now working for an hourly wage.

These are just some of the people from across the country impacted by the American jobs crisis who will join together for the Show Us the Jobs tour—representing the hundreds of thousands of people whose experiences aren’t reflected in the latest economic indicators and whose stories aren’t being told.

What?

The bus tour will bring together 51 people, one from every state in the nation and the District of Columbia, to travel across the country and tell their personal stories about how the lack of good jobs has affected them, their family or their community.

Despite the so-called “economic recovery,” hundreds of thousands of Americans remain unemployed or underemployed, stuck in low-wage, no-benefits jobs with limited job security.

From March 24-31, these 51 people will visit eight states and 18 cities to talk about the devastating impact the current economic policy has had on average Americans and communities.

Where?

The bus tour will stop in some of the places that have been hardest hit by job loss—from small town America to larger cities, including the Midwest, the Great Lakes and the Rust Belt.

The bus tour will visit eight states that will be decisive in the upcoming presidential election—Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania and will culminate in Washington, D.C.

Why?

It is time to focus on the real jobs crisis in America. Our nation’s current economic policy is failing, and we need a president who will provide long-term solutions to strengthen the economy and promote job growth.
